Your Dental Implants Timeline
Each dental implants patient is unique in their needs; as a result, treatment time may vary depending on a variety of factors, such as the size of your restoration, preparatory procedures, and how quickly you heal between stages. During your initial consultation at Pampered Smiles, Dr. J.D. Murray or Dr. William Alexander can conduct a comprehensive examination and provide you with an estimate of how long your dental implants timeline will take. At our office in Atlanta, GA, Drs. Murray and Alexander can perform every stage of implants treatment, including preparatory procedures such as bone grafts, implant placement surgery, and designing your final crown, bridge, or denture.
A Typical Treatment Timeline
While your timeline will be uniquely tailored to your needs, most dental implant treatments follows a similar pattern. Keep in mind the recovery time necessary after each procedure can vary based on your health and how quickly your body heals.
The Planning Stage
The first step in restoring your smile with dental implants is an initial consultation at our office. Dr. Murray or Alexander will sit down with you and discuss your needs and goal for your restorative treatment. We will also take a series of scans and x-rays to assess the health of your smile and the density of your jawbone.
Based on this information, Dr. Murray or Alexander can design a treatment plan suited to your specific situation. This treatment plan may include preparatory procedures to address oral health issues or restore lost jawbone tissue. At this time, we can provide you with an estimated timeline.
Preparing for Implants
Depending on your oral health, this stage may involve treatment for oral health concerns, such as periodontal disease or tooth decay, or preparatory procedures such as a bone graft to address low bone density in your jaw. Drs. Murray and Alexander can perform bone grafts to achieve sufficient jawbone tissue for implant placement.
The type of bone graft you receive will affect your recovery time. For example, a sinus lift can take six to nine months to heal, while a block bone graft typically requires four to six months. Once you have healed from any preparatory procedures, Dr. Murray or Alexander will determine if you are ready to undergo implant surgery.
Implant Placement Surgery
Implant surgery typically takes between two and four hours. The length of the procedure depends on how many implants you need to support your restoration. For a dental crown, only a single implant is needed. However, a full set of dentures may require six implants.
During implant placement, we will first administer anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable. Then, your doctor will make a small incision in your gums and embed the implant post into your jawbone. The incisions are then closed with sutures.
Over the next four to six months, the small titanium posts will fuse with the surrounding jawbone tissue in a process known as osseointegration. When complete, the posts will be a permanent part of your anatomy and provide a stable base for your restoration. You will need to attend a series of follow-up appointments during this time so Dr. Murray or Dr. Alexander can monitor the process and ensure your posts are fusing correctly.
Drs. Murray and Alexander can perform virtually every stage of implant treatment, from your bone grafting procedure to the placement of your final restoration.
Abutment Placement and Impressions
When your implants have healed, Dr. Murray or Alexander will attach small connectors known as abutments to the posts. Then we will take a series of impressions and send them to a trusted dental laboratory so they can fabricate your restoration. Depending on the size of your restoration, this may take a few weeks. We can fit you for a temporary restoration during this time to protect your abutments.
Attaching the Restoration
The final step of the process is placing your restoration. Dr. Murray or Alexander will check the fit and feel of your dental crown, bridge, or dentures. Then he can attach them to the abutments for a fully restored smile.
